The purpose of education, in general, is imparting or gaining knowledge, skills, values, etc., but its purpose extends beyond the classroom. Hopefully, educated individuals will become life-long learners and responsible, open-minded citizens. Successful students will enter the world armed with tools that will enhance the well-being of their communities and their own life experiences. Education is critical in leading fulfilling, meaningful, and prosperous lives. This is education’s ultimate goal.

In striving for these outcomes, a teacher must be more than a navigator of knowledge. They are morally obligated to enter the classroom with only the highest expectations for every student. Thus, the teacher maximizes the positive benefits of any self-fulfilling prophecy; their students will rise to the occasion with dedication, perseverance, and hard work. An effective teacher should possess the four “E”s: Enthusiasm, Energy, Empathy, and Enjoyment.

An open mind, a positive attitude, and high expectations should be present daily in the classroom. Educators owe it to students and the community to bring consistency, diligence, and warmth to inspire the same traits in our future citizens, leaders, and teachers.

Students learn best when guided by the creative energy a teacher must always have; one of the most vital goals is to “infect” students with a constant thirst for knowledge and wisdom. All students can learn, but not necessarily on the same path. Not everyone “gets it” at the same time or, more particularly, in the same way, and some students may need a unique path to learning, even if it requires blazing a new trail.
